FAQ's

What is an Audio Guide/Audio Tour?

Audio guides / audio tours are specific guided tours of a popular or historic location. A typical audio tour consists of a route diagram or plan showing the projected tour itinerary, relevant instructions and the audio files downloadable as audio tracks. The audio files are in MP3 format and you play them on your own personal electronic device or smart phone.

What are these files?

Each audio tour is divided into segments or tracks. Each track contains an audio commentary in an MP3 format with instructions on how to reach the next viewing point. Commentaries provide information on the sights and other features of interest along the way.

How do I receive my audio tour?

Once payment has been authorized, you will be presented with a "download" page. This page will allow you to download your purchased guide or guides onto your own PC, Notebook, Mac or other personal electronic device.

What will I get for my money?

You will receive a zipped file which contains:

What hardware and software do I need?

Users need an electronic device capable of playing MP3 files e.g. an MP3 player, an iPod, 3G, Smart Phone or similar personal device. Also necessary will be a means of un-zipping the attached downloaded file. With a PC or Notebook, Windows XP has “file un-zipping software” built-in.

Older versions of windows will require ‘Win-zip’. A free copy can be downloaded from http://www.winzip.com.

Also needed will be access to Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar to read and print the route plan - which comes attached as a ‘PDF file’. A free copy also can be downloaded from  http://www.adobe.com.

Both items of software are available on any PC within internet cafes everywhere as standard.

Users with a MAC will need to be able to expand (or unzip) the .zip file attached and then will need to be able to open and print the audio tour plan which is supplied as Adobe Acrobat files (PDF files).

Can I download these files directly onto a MAC?

Yes. They will download directly into iTunes.

Alternatively - Uploading the Audio Tour to a personal electronic device

This is no different from uploading music.

Will your files be compatible with an iPod or MP3 player?

Yes. All our files are MP3 files and will be compatible with any MP3 player.

Listening to the Audio Guide - How do I listen to an audio tour?

Once you have loaded the guide onto your MP3 player you will see that it is divided into tracks with short titles telling you what they are about. You can choose which one you want to listen to, click on it and then listen just like any song or tune on your MP3.

Track #00 - ’The Intro’ explains you how the audio tour format works

Track # 01- Explains the locations background and setting and how to get to the starting point

Track # 02- Details the sights around you.

Each of the tracks concludes with very simple directions to the next location. You then press pause while you walk to the place and press play when you arrive to listen to what you can see around you and so on for each track...The concluding track gives you directions to exit. If you happen to lose your way then find the number of the last location you’ve visited on the accompanying plan.

·         Just un-zip the file into a folder on your PC, Notebook or Mac and ‘save’

·         Print the audio-tour route plan

·         Upload the files onto your MP3 player or iPod.

What size (in MB) will the files be?

Each individual audio tour will contain segments – in the form of individual ‘numbered tracks’. This can contain anywhere between 11 and 40 individual ‘tracks’ depending on the individual location being visited. The total space required on your MP3 player for each guide will never exceed 30MB and will more usually be less than 20MB.

Why do I not just buy a guidebook? Why choose audio?

You can, as there is still a place for guidebooks but they are sometimes bulky and difficult to manage outdoors.

Guidebooks have long been the best solution to planning and enjoying a vacation, city break or to assist you round places of interest, but things have changed. Although guidebooks cover the underlying history, culture and heritage of the chosen location, you’ve got to do the work - you’ve got to do the reading! We believe that you've got to be free to get the most out of visiting a historic location, art or history museum; free to effortlessly take in all the sights and exhibits as you pass them. MP3 audio guides let you do exactly this, with audio tours that take you around the most important areas and exhibits within a museum or gallery while allowing you the time to see what you want to see in a timeframe that allows you to stop at will.

How long do individual audio tours take?

We project a time a normal audio tour should take approximately 90 minutes – there are a small number of exceptions, such as at The Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor.

Do I have to do the whole audio tour in one go?

No, you can do as little or as much as you wish. You can stop after any individual track on one day and resume it on another day as you wish.

Do I have to do all of the audio tour tracks in numerical order?

Do I have to start at Track # 1?

No and no. You can go to any point on the location route plan and listen to the individual track with the corresponding number. Each track at its conclusion directs you onto the next one, but you can ignore the directions part and just listen to content wherever you want to go. And, of course, you can start anywhere.

Do I need to print out any operational instructions for the audio tour to bring with me?

There is a recorded version of how the audio guides work in the beginning of each audio tour. It's called the ‘Intro Track’ or ‘TRACK # 00’ and you can listen to it at any time before you start or you may skip over it, as required. Each audio tour also contains a ‘Concluding Track’ after each tour finishes.

Is there copyright over these audio tours?

All audio guides are for the sole use of the purchaser only. Please refer to our Conditions & Terms of Use for details or Email: enquiries@imuseumguides.com
